HAWC encourages Team Scott to Get Fit on Route 66

4/13/2011 - SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. -- In support of Comprehensive Airmen Fitness, the Health and Wellness Center is sponsoring a Get Fit on Route 66 base-wide fitness incentive program to help Team Scott members meet their fitness goals.

"Physical fitness is about setting goals and finding the right lifestyle, through exercise, rest and nutrition, to achieve those goals. It is an integral part of Comprehensive Airman Fitness that helps to better equip us to tackle challenges in both our personal and professional lives," said Col. Michael Hornitschek, 375th Air Mobility Wing commander.

As part of the program, participants will track their progress by tracing their path on the famous route from the shores of Lake Michigan to the Pacific Ocean.

Along with a log book, participants will also get fitness tips and information about the cities along Route 66. For every minute of physical activity, participants will mark off one-mile on the 2448-mile highway. Those who log enough miles to get to the Pacific Ocean will earn a Get Fit on Route 66 incentive prize.

"Of course physical activity helps to improve your overall fitness level, but there are numerous other benefits to exercise," said Laura Weiglein, HAWC Health & Fitness Technician. "Some of these benefits include decreased risk of chronic disease, increased bone density, improved mood, decreased stress, and improved sleep. Get Fit on Route 66 is a fun-way to increase your daily physical activity and gain all of these great benefits."

The challenge is open to Team Scott and participants of all fitness abilities are welcome.
Get Fit on Route 66 kicks off April 18 with registration ending May 13. To register, stop in at the HAWC from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Registration forms will also be available at the Fitness Center and James Gym during the duration of the program.

All participants must complete the challenge and turn in trip logs to the HAWC no later than Sept. 13. Spaces are limited, so register early. For information, contact the HAWC at 256-7139.
