Iyana holds a trophy and wears a sash for her win in the Miss Amazing Illinois, which seeks to increase the self-confidence of young women with disabilities. “She didn’t want to be classified as having sickle cell disease; she wanted to be classified as Iyana,” said her mother, Tech. Tyran, his mother, Tech. Sgt. Shonda Blanks, 375th Operations Support Squadron commander’s support staff NCOIC, and his sisters Iyana and Nyla did things together as a family, including attending Cardinals games. Blanks said spending time together was and is always important. “After she passed [Tyran] was telling me as he pulled his other sister close and everybody was crying and upset, ‘We just gotta go hard for Iyana,’” said Blanks. “So that’s kind of been my mantra for myself - go hard for her. And that’s another reason why I say, ‘Okay, how can I contribute to her legacy?’” (Photo courtesy)

The recycling center at Scott Air Force Base is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week and is located south of South Drive, in the compound behind the Lemon Lot. Allowed materials include all paper, metals, glass, and plastic items previously permitted in recycling. However, shredded paper needs to be in a sealed bag. As a reminder, we do not accept any electronic items or large furniture items for recycling. A new feature of the recycling contract is that customers no longer need to sort their approved recyclables. The contractor will mechanically sort all items, so everything can be placed together inside the available dumpster.

Midwest Cyber Center awards 1st place

The Midwest Cyber Center welcomed 20 students from the St. Louis region at Maryville University for our CyberPatriot event. Six volunteers from Scott Air Force Base lead youth from University City High, McCluer North, Francis Howell, Triad Middle School, Rodgers Middle School, Mascoutah Middle School, Collegiate School of Medicine & Science, Priory and Crestview through different cyber centric challenges. Prizes were awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place teams.
