POW/MIA Day
SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. -- Members of the Polish American War Veterans perform a 21-Gun Salute while Bob Schaefer plays Taps on the bugle during the 18th annual Prisoner of War/Missing in Action Recognition Ceremony Saturday at Freedom Farm, Freeburg, Ill., hosted by the Scott POW/MIA Council. The day was celebrated by local veterans and active duty members including former prisoners of war or members listed as “missing in action” and their families. As of Sept. 3, there are still 4,452 servicemembers missing from World War I; 74,213 from World War II; 8,048 from the Korean War; 123 from the Cold War; 1,731 from Southeast Asia; one from Operation Iraqi Freedom; and one from Operation Enduring Freedom.
