O'Fallon Dorms named Olympic champions Published Aug. 7, 2008 By Airman 1st Class Amber Kelly-Woodward 375th Airlift Wing Public Affairs SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. -- The temperature at noon was 92 degrees Aug. 1. While most Airmen at Scott were returning from lunch to go back to the office, dorm residents returned home. The residents changed out of their uniforms and registered for the 2008 Dorm Olympics, hosted by the Dorm Council. The Dorm Olympics began with Col. Al Hunt, 375th Airlift Wing commander, removing his hat and encouraging the Airmen to have a good time. Colonel Hunt also revealed Belleville Police Department's newest D.A.R.E. vehicle featuring a painted coin on the side with an eagle and the original Scott Field gate with a flag in the background that says Scott Air Force Base Joint Total Force. Chief Master Sgt. James Suttles, 375th Airlift Wing command chief, also encouraged the Airmen to have fun while starting friendly competition amongst the Airmen. "Airmen work pretty hard in their daily jobs, so the Dorm Olympics provided a day for them to have some fun and hang out," said Airman Geena Poff, 375th Logistics Readiness Squadron logistics planner. The first events were the tug-of-war and putt-putt golf competitions. Airmen also had the opportunity to dunk Staff Sgt. Nicoli Hilscher, First Term Airman Center instructor, into a tank of water by hitting a target with a softball. Hot dogs, hamburgers and grilled chicken were provided by the Nightingale Inn Dining Hall while music was playing. The NCO Council also provided ice cream. Next came the Amazing Race. Three Airmen from each dorm building were given clues which took them to several locations including the Airman Leadership School, the First Term Airman Center and James' Gym. At each location, the Airmen had to perform tasks such as searching for a license plate in the Shiloh-Scott Metrolink parking lot, kicking a soccer ball into the goal at mid-field, dunking themselves into a pool of water and wringing their clothes to fill a bucket and lastly, dunking Chief Suttles in the dunk tank. Other events included instrumental video games, 4-on-4 flag football, volleyball, a free throw basketball shootout and a car show. Airman 1st Class Tu Nguyen, 375th Services Squadron food service journeyman, won the car show with his Toyota S2000. Airmen who participated in the car show paid to enter; half of the proceeds went to Airman Nguyen and the other half went to the Dorm Council. The Olympics concluded at 4:30 p.m. The O'Fallon Dorm took first place, then Mascoutah and Belleville. The O'Fallon Dorm residents received a $100 AAFES gift card to be used on a dorm gathering. "It was a good experience that I hope everyone enjoyed," said Airman Poff. "I know I enjoyed it. We started planning in March and took a lot of hard work. We also received a lot of help from Chief Suttles and the many Scott councils."
