The holidays are supposed to be a holly, jolly time of the year, full of thoughtful deeds and loving sentiments. In the past few weeks, however, residents in two local communities have been targeted with senseless and cruel acts of hatred.

There was a cross burning in Belleville on the lawn of a home of one of Joint Total Force Scott's own Airman, and flyers about the Ku Klux Kan were distributed in one Shiloh subdivision.

These acts are absolutely deplorable and are not indicative of the true climate of the surrounding Scott communities. Local neighborhoods like Belleville and Shiloh have been enriched by Joint Total Force Scott's diversity and have embraced every opportunity to welcome us, regardless of our race, religious preference, political party, or gender.

The city of O'Fallon, for example, hosts an annual picnic for all of Joint Total Force Scott and their families with free food and children's activities. Mascoutah playfully challenges us to a game of softball every year at their Old-Fashioned Independence Day Celebration, and the city of Belleville warmly invites us to their yearly Art on the Square showcase event among many others. All three communities "adopted" a dormitory this year and Shiloh will do the same next year.

With over 75 percent of Joint Total Force Scott living off base in the greater St. Louis metropolitan area, every community we touch has found ways to show their support. Some post banners and ribbons; others fly the flag. In addition, many of the businesses offer tangible support such as military discounts, and most residents in these neighborhoods smile and say thanks every time they see us in uniform.

All of this support is given without thought or consideration to race.

These demonstrations of support and acts of kindness are what we remember and appreciate. They truly make serving an honor and privilege. We must not let the cowardly acts of a few taint the goodwill that exists between Joint Total Force Scott and the communities outside the gates.

In the spirit of the holidays, let's shift our focus to celebrating with family and friends both in the communities we live in and the communities we call home.

Continue to keep safety and security at the forefront of everything you do during the holidays. Bundle up in your Wingman's coat and be prepared to step in when the need arises. Most importantly, take time to gather with loved ones and share in the season of giving.

Laura, Zach, Shannon, Amie, and I send our heartfelt thanks to each of you for all you do every day to keep this nation strong and free as well as for the sacrifices you and your families make to afford other countries the same opportunities. You give great strength to us and others because of your dedication.

Best wishes for continued happiness and success in 2008! Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and Happy New Year!!!
