Our Airmen are Amazing! Published June 3, 2010 By Col. Gary Goldstone 375th Air Mobility Wing Commander SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. -- At a time when more than 230 of our 375th Air Mobility Wing Airmen are deployed around the world, we should all stop to recognize the amazing things they are accomplishing. With the surge currently taking place in Afghanistan, our Airmen are being asked to do more and work harder, and they are truly showing their great worth to the Air Force and joint force. We have people such as 1st Lt. Lorie Nola, deployed from the 375th Contracting Squadron, who was personally recognized by the Joint Contracting Command-Iraq/Afghanistan commanding general for her superb management of a $20 million project that delivered 900 Stryker route clearance vehicles. These route-clearance vehicles help protect our front-line troops and convoys from IEDs. She also managed more than 50 other projects and salvaged a $7 million billeting project that houses 550 troops. Her dedication and leadership ensures her team Enables Combat Power by providing for these front-line servicemembers. Senior Airman Michael Garrett, a medical service logistic technician, who was recently assigned to a Forward Surgical Team at a small Forward Operating Base in Southern Afghanistan, is another of our outstanding Airmen. At this assignment, Airman Garrett provided his team's surgeons with everything they needed to save the lives of our fellow servicemembers. Throughout his time at this assignment he ordered and maintained over $2.5 million worth of equipment and medical supplies. He took every opportunity to step outside of his comfort zone to make a difference and even had the opportunity to scrub in for a surgical procedure. Not only are our Airmen supporting our fellow servicemembers, but they are also working to improve the quality of life at the local communities at these deployed locations. Major Andy Sheehan is a civil engineer who is deployed to Pakistan and he is working to provide text books to be used in the schools that the Taliban is trying so hard to snuff out. Major Sheehan saw an opportunity to help them and to provide for their future and the future of their country. He reached out to his friends and family to help collect these books, and that initial reach has started to spread across the United States. The books are for all grade levels, and he has already collected hundreds of pounds of text books. Even with makeshift classrooms and very limited materials, these books will greatly help the teachers and students. Robert E. Lee once said, "Do your duty in all things. You cannot do more; you should never wish to do less." Clearly our Airmen are doing their duty today. The things they do both here and abroad affect the lives of so many people. Without doubt our servicemembers operate in dangerous environments, but they have an incredible impact each and every day--saving and improving lives. They bring life-saving equipment to the front lines. They provide for the education of people they have never met before. Our Airmen are in action, and they show the world what it means when we say the 375th Air Mobility Wing is Enabling Combat Power! AIR POWER!
