More than a moment

There have been many great movements throughout the 20th Century. None was greater than the marches and demonstrations for Civil Rights that united different races, creeds, colors and cultures of people to stand together. Some were beaten, verbally assaulted and some even lost their lives as they stood united as a people. Separation was not an option.

As we near the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, reflect on this thought: It's more than a moment.

Is it just a moment to stand next to each other in a common cause, but then never taking the time to really get to know the other person? It only takes a moment to greet a person by saying, "How are you," but sadly, many fail to ask or listen to the response.

If we are to grow and gain a better understanding of the importance and value of caring for our fellow man it is going to take more than a moment to accomplish it. We are going to have to keep reaching, teaching and leading by example our children and those in our circle of influence.

Therefore, let us take time to partner and fellowship with one another in the sprit of sharing our invaluable experiences that will build and foster better relationships. After all, the value you put in another is the value he or she will add to your life, because the time given was more than just a moment.

To celebrate that moment in time when Martin Luther King, Jr., delivered his most famous "I have a dream" speech and to honor the man behind the message, a luncheon will be held on Friday, Jan. 14 at 11:30 a.m. at the Scott Club.

Signs ups for the luncheon have begun and are being circulated via e-mail. The deadline to R.S.V.P. is Jan. 7. The menu is blackened grilled chicken breast, macaroni and cheese, black eye peas, salad, corn bread, and banana pudding for dessert, or choose a vegetarian lasagna with steamed vegetables instead. Cost for Club members is $10.50 and for non-members, $12.50. For questions about sign ups, call Master Sgt. Tracey Stephens at 256-3054.
