This Memorial Day remember those who served and make safety a priority Published May 24, 2012 By Gen. Raymond E. Johns Air Mobility Command commander SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. -- Each and every day of service you give to our Nation, you are honoring the men and women who have given their lives in defense of freedom. With the Memorial Day weekend upon us, please pause a moment to reflect on those who came before us. Courageous men and women whose selfless devotion secured the prosperity and way of life we enjoy. Chief Kaiser and I know the challenges you face today with a continuing high operations tempo driven by our commitments around the world. We could not be more proud of your continued successes; you are making a global impact. With every challenge we are presented, you rise to the occasion. You say "goodbye" to your families instead of "goodnight", knowing in a matter of hours you may be halfway around the world to help those you don't even know. We know our Airmen are not alone; behind every Airman are those who support them. Family, friends, communities who recognize we are part of something bigger than the individual. For everyone who stands with an Airman; thank you. Our Airmen would not be able to confidently accomplish their mission without knowing the home front is safe and secure. Not only is Memorial Day set aside to honor our fallen but it also marks the traditional start of the summer season. In the Air Force, it marks that start of our focus on the Critical Days of Summer. If you're planning a road trip, ensure you are ready to safely travel. If you plan to engage in extreme sports or water activities, make certain you stay within the limitations of your training and equipment. Being keenly aware of your surroundings and potential safety hazards is every Airman's responsibility. We can't afford to lose a single Airman. You are too important - to your family, to the mission and to our Air Force. Chief Kaiser and I thank you all for what you do each day. You are our most valuable resource, and our goal is to ensure your well-being. We need all Mobility Airmen to look out for each other. Look to those who have gone before us, and honor their sacrifice; look out for yourself and your wingmen; look out for those who need help. Enjoy the Memorial Day holiday as you reflect on those who have come before us and enjoy your summer, but most importantly, be safe!
