Maya Angelou said, "I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel."

With the hefty work schedules we all maintain and the temporary duty assignments and deployments that we are all asked to go on, it's easy to overlook what is really important in our lives.

I often find myself taking the things that matter most to me for granted and losing sight of my priorities.

It has taken a lot of effort on my part to do my best not to miss a moment of all the great things I've been given. I have to step back often and re-cage what is really important to me. Something so small as reminding someone they mean a lot to me, telling my wife I love her, giving the dog a belly rub. As I reflect on this past year, a very busy year, I realize I might have missed some of these opportunities.

With the new year upon us, I have resolved to remind myself regularly of my priorities, and I encourage you to do the same. Realize that your inbox will never be empty, and no matter how tough things seem and how busy you feel, the sky is not falling. Think to yourself, will this be important in a year?

Yesterday was a gift, tomorrow is not guaranteed. Life is short, so don't miss a moment of it.
