FALCON conference mentors young Airmen Published Sept. 14, 2016 By Airman 1st Class Gwendalyn Smith 375th Air Mobility Wing Public Affairs SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. -- More than 180 Airmen gathered at the Education Center at Scott Air Force Base Aug. 31-Sept. 1 for the First Term Airman Leadership Conference, or FALCON, which was designed for first-term Airmen, by first-term Airmen. The theme of the event was “Today’s Airmen, Tomorrow’s Leaders.” “The education center provided the facility and some of the facilitators,” said Senior Airman Kenyana Cornethan, a previous First Four president and 437th Supply Chain Operations Squadron material management specialist. “We had Roland Smith teaching the College 101 class, of course, and a few other civilians in the education center who taught classes also.” The First Four council FALCON committee coordinates, plans, and gathers diverse facilitators throughout Team Scott to provide many perspectives and experiences to the Airmen. This year’s conference marked FALCON’s fifth year. “We are here to provide for all Airmen, not just the First Four as a council,” Corethan said. “It’s all about all our Airmen and making sure they are equipped with all the information they need to build their careers.” Throughout the day Airmen had a choice of classes on professional or personal development. Classes offered were on what to expect when transitioning to be an NCO or what to expect when serving while starting a family. Others focused on leadership and the different opportunities available for Airmen progressing in their career. Skill labs were also offered, giving Airmen a chance to learn and compete in workshops involving impromptu speaking, bullet writing and various leadership scenarios. During the closing ceremony a new First Four council was elected by Airmen who attended the conference. “The most important thing that someone can take out of the FALCON is that it is not just two days of classes. It has a much larger purpose,” said Airman 1st Class Ryan Jones, the new First Four president. “This isn’t a chance for us to just promote professional development; this is an opportunity to set the example and to set the standard for all the Airmen at Scott. I’m really proud of this year’s team and looking forward to next year.” Senior Master Sgt. Melissa Royster, 635th Supply Chains Operations Group and guest speaker, closed the ending ceremony with, “Because you are here, to me you’re not just leaders of tomorrow; you are leaders of today.”
