Summer has begun, and school has closed for a couple of months. To help Airmen make the most of this free time, Scott Air Force Base offers a variety of family-friendly activities, including our very own bowling alley.

In addition to offering a great family experience, the Stars and Strikes Bowling Center is working continuously to renovate and modernize its facilities, in order to make their patrons’ experiences more memorable.

“We are basically re-modeling the entire inside of the building,” said James McCormick, 375th Force Support Squadron bowling center and Cardinal Creek Golf Course general manager. “We are bringing the bowling center out of the 70’s look and updating all of it. In addition, behind the scenes we have completed a complete Pin-Setter upgrade. This project updated the machines that set the bowling pins; the new machines are quieter with improved operations that was much needed.”

Renovations began at the beginning of May and will continue through the summer. Hours of operation will stay the same and remain unaffected through completion. The dining room, however, will be closed for a week to be redone; closure dates are still being determined.

Management said they are planning on completing the renovations by the end of August. So far, they’ve taken the carpet off the wall, painted the walls, and upgraded the pin-setter machines.

“The improvements are going to make it more enjoyable,” said Valorie Roberts, Stars and Strikes Bowling Center supervisor recreation assistant. “I’m excited for August and to see what it’ll look like.”

The upgrades to the lanes are expected to improve the experience for bowlers and run more efficiently. Additional work will be done to the walls and other amenities.

“A modern flowing more appealing center will benefit the entire Scott AFB community and allow for more use of meeting and banquet space,” said McCormick. “We also plan to add a game room as another feature amenity to the property.”

Although renovations are projected to be completed in August, management is also hoping to have new furniture by the summer of 2017.

After renovations are finished, the bowling center will have an event to celebrate the improvements. The date has not yet been determined.
