Scott to host transition summit, education fair Published June 22, 2016 By Staff Sgt. Maria Bowman 375th Air Mobility Wing Public Affairs SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. -- Scott Air Force Base is hosting a free hiring fair and transition summit July 12-13 at the Scott Event Center, which is open to all servicemembers, veterans, and military spouses. The July 12 activities start at 1 p.m. with job industry overviews, a 4 p.m. panel discussion with employers at 4 p.m., and a networking reception between employers and job seekers at 5:30 p.m. For July 13, the day starts at 9 a.m. with workshops and the 1 p.m. hiring fair and career forum. In addition, an education fair is also being held July 13 from 1-4 p.m. which will focus on five high-growth, in demand industries: information technology, cyber security, advanced manufacturing, healthcare, and supply chain and transportation. The two-day Transition Summit is one of the largest hiring and education events the base has ever conducted, and is being sponsored in conjunction with the Hiring our Heroes organization. It will feature informative and interactive panel events, recruiter training, and facilitated discussions focused on improving competitive employment. In addition, it will also serve as a networking opportunity for attendees. Betty Hart, Airman and Family Readiness Center primary project officer, said she always recommends that veterans begin a goal with its end in mind. “Every service member and family member is in ‘transition’ upon enlistment, and this summit is for people who want to know more and do more when they become a civilian again one day,” said Hart. Attendees will learn about the top five industries in the world and Hart said she hopes people will be encouraged to take the necessary steps along their military career to be a successful, career-ready candidate as they transition out of military service. During the event, there will also be a community question and answer forum with expert-level panelists on transition and employment so attendees can learn what is being done to streamline access to resources and opportunities for veterans and spouses in employment and education. There will also be a speed mentoring networking event where personnel can meet employers and business owners in a more intimate setting and get focused attention on their skills and talents. There will be several breakout session workshops, including personal branding and military spouse employment. “The culminating event is the largest-ever hiring and education event for Scott AFB with 90 exhibitors,” Hart said. “Scott AFB is the first stand-alone Air Force installation to host this national level event, and I am excited to be a part of this historical moment, but more excited for the attendees who can experience it.” Roland Smith, Education Office education manager, said “The summit is an amazing opportunity for military members of all services, active duty, retired and their families. This event enables attendees to participate in structured, blended forums that can lead them into skilled, good paying jobs through knowledge of industry demands and the educational options available to leverage their marketability.” Interested personnel should register for the event at www.scottafrc.com.
