Base completes pool renovations Published June 22, 2016 By Sean Clements 375th Air Mobility Wing Public Affairs SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. -- Having spent the offseason installing new slides, chlorine pumps and handicap accessible amenities, the Fitness Center pool officially opened with a ribbon cutting ceremony June 17 as a free destination to escape the heat and humidity of another scorching summer. “Finding new and innovative ways to enhance the quality of life of our Airmen and their families at Scott AFB has always been high on my priority list,” said Col. Laura Lenderman, 375th Air Mobility Wing commander. “It makes me happy that we were able to make these improvements to the base while still keeping the pool free of charge for our military and civilian families.” The historic bathhouse facility underwent a facelift that included the installation of all-new flooring and stainless steel fixtures. Underground improvements were also made in the way of energy efficient pumps, to more effectively manage the high volume of attendance expected in the coming years, while limiting pool closures for maintenance. Handicap accessible bathroom stalls and ramps were also included in the renovation plan. In addition, the pool received slide upgrades. The open-top slide was removed from the main pool in favor of two enclosed, water efficient slides. Along with the main pool upgrades, the baby pool also received an upgrade of its own, in the form of a five-foot slide shaped like a duck, which is now named “Doug” after a naming contest that was held during the opening festivities. During the opening, there were games and bounce houses as part of Outdoor Recreation’s effort to make visiting the pool a “fun and safe experience,” said Debbie Monfre, assistant director of Outdoor Recreation. “We are looking forward to a great summer with our Scott members.” Craig Ford, a pool guest, said he’s glad for the upgrades and renovations. “I remember being little (here), and my friends and I would constantly go to the pool to go down the slide. I think being able to get out to the pool to cool off and to exercise is important especially during the summer months.” The pool is available for open swim sessions from 1-6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 12:30-6:30 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. It’s also home to the base’s 140-member swim team: the Scott Sharks. The pool is also available for private pool parties, and swimming lessons for all ages.
