As the temperatures continue to rise, renovations to the swimming pool and the bathhouse facility are coming to a close. Having spent the offseason installing new slides, chlorine pumps and handicap accessible amenities, Scott Air Force Base pool has become a destination to escape the heat and humidity of another scorching summer.

The historic bathhouse facility underwent a facelift that included the installation of all-new flooring and stainless steel fixtures. Underground improvements were also made in the way of energy efficient pumps, to more effectively manage the high volume of attendance expected in the coming years, while limiting pool closures for maintenance.  Handicap accessible bathroom stalls and ramps were included in the renovation plan.

The pool also received slide upgrades. The open-top slide was removed from the main pool in favor of two enclosed, water efficient slides. Along with the main pool upgrades, the baby pool also received an upgrade of its own, in the form of a five-foot slide shaped like a duck.

This project was part of an infrastructure improvement initiative spearheaded by Colonel Laura Lenderman, 375th Mobility Wing Commander.

“Finding new and innovative ways to enhance the quality of life of our Airmen and their families here at Scott AFB has always been high on my priority list,” said Lenderman. “It makes me happy that we were able to make these improvements to the base while still keeping the pool free of charge for our military and civilian families.”

Also acting as the practice facility for numerous swim teams, including the 140-member Scott Sharks, the pool is available for open swim sessions from 1 to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 12:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.

Lenderman will conduct a ribbon cutting on the newly remodeled facility during the grand-opening event today 12:30. The ceremony will also include bounce houses, games and a “Name the Duck” contest to give a name to the newest addition to the baby pool.

“Our team strives to make a visit to the pool a fun and safe experience and we are looking forward to a great summer with our Scott members,” said Debbie Monfre, Assistant Director of Outdoor Recreation.
