Wing safety office reminding Team Scott to travel safe

The Labor Day weekend is here and plenty of people will be traveling, so there is no better time than now to be reminded of driving safety.

According to the American Automobile Association, 33 million people will travel 50 miles or more during Labor Day weekend, a 2.9 percent increase from last year.

"With any holiday, two major safety precautions need to be reiterated, distance driving and drinking and driving," said Thomas J. Miles, 375th Air Mobility Wing Safety deputy ground safety superintendent.

Distance driving refers to anyone driving outside the local area, but these safety rules should be followed no matter what road you're on or how far you're traveling.

The safety office's focus on distance driving is all about fatigue when behind the wheel, either mental or physical.

"Take time to plan your trip and remember to stick to it because too often people get caught up with their friends and family that they lose sight of their plans," said Miles. "Don't forget the basics though. Always remember to buckle up and get plenty of rest, but don't push yourself with long hours on the road."

People of all ages need to be reminded of the dangers of using cell phones or any electronic devices while driving.

"The second major focus is drinking and driving and with any holiday there are dangers from the increase of alcohol consumption," said Miles.

Drinking and driving is the No. 1 cause of fatalities.

The first thing that should come to mind with alcohol consumption is 0-0-1-3: 0 underage drinking offenses; 0 drinking and driving; 1 drink per hour; no more than 3 drinks per evening.

"Police will be out in full force, but no matter we must be responsible wingmen and always have a plan," said Miles.

Regardless of your situation, Armed Forces Against Drunk Driving can be contacted 24/7 at 256-HOME (4663) and will give Scott members a ride home, no questions asked.

Miles said, "What's most important is that we want to see our members back from the weekend in the same condition as they left us."
