The Air Force is always looking for ways to boost fitness and morale, and for the Scott community, the James Gym Center track and field is being renovated.

The track is closed until March 1 while construction crews remove the old track and field and install a new synthetic turf.

Eric Michiels, construction project manager, said, "We're stripping the site and preparing subgrade for what's going to be a turf field for better recreational purposes like flag football."

The subgrade is the surface underneath the turf that allows for a level, smooth turf field.

Airman 1st Class Kenneth Legarde, 375th Force Support Squadron fitness specialist, said the upgrades should improve fitness and fun.

"People are definitely going to be able to perform a lot better on the turf because there aren't as many limiting factors on it now. It's really going to be fun," he said. "With this update we're not only looking to improve the quality of games, like flag football, but also raise morale by showing we do care about our facilities."

Because the track will not be accessible during this time, the cardio component of the fitness assessment test will take place on the running trail (along Golf Course Road) behind the Honor Guard, Bldg. 386.
