Back-up child care plans helpful for military parents Published Jan. 22, 2014 By Airman 1st Class Sarah Hall-Kirchner 375th Air Mobility Wing Public Affairs SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. -- Four days of school were canceled and many child care centers were closed Jan. 6-9 after a winter storm dropped 10 inches of snow on Scott Air Force Base and the surrounding area. While children played in the snow, parents may have found it difficult to enjoy the unexpected days out of school, because they found themselves looking for alternate care. "Fortunately, I was able to stay home with my daughter Monday," said Staff Sgt. Micaelee Neubert, 375th Air Mobility Wing equal opportunity advisor and single parent to a one-year-old. Only mission essential personnel were required to report to work Monday, but Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, even with schools and child care centers closed, the mission on base continued. She had a back-up plan for care in situations such as this. She was back supporting the mission even through the storm because she had alternate childcare already arranged. "I have learned that if you have a back-up plan in place, situations like this are less likely to stress you out," she said. "Preparedness is the key to everything in life, especially military life. I have understanding and supportive supervision, but if I didn't, being prepared works in my favor." Master Sgt. Steven Cardon, 375th Comptroller Squadron first sergeant, emphasized that planning can make the difference between failing or succeeding and ensures the mission can continue. "It is important to plan ahead because it's what will help someone through their day-to-day activities," said Cardon. "This plan should balance work, school, hobbies, family and other activities so that our mission at Scott AFB can be achieved." Many people simply took leave to be home with their children, while others called on friends or neighbors to assist. Some people may not be used to Illinois weather, where snow, ice and low temperatures, especially in rural areas, contribute to schools being closed. Cardon added, "As the best trained Air Force in the world, Team Scott is run by professional and responsible Airmen, civilians and contractors, and we appreciate the efforts everyone makes to ensure the mission gets completed."
