Many people begin each new year hoping to have a better one than the last. A common New Year's resolution is to get healthier or to lose weight. The Health and Wellness Center at Scott Air Force Base hopes to encourage all members of Team Scott to achieve a healthier lifestyle with its Biggest Loser Challenge. In its fifth year, the challenge began Jan. 27 and lasts eight weeks. The program is open to Team Scott. "The purpose of this program is to kick off the new year with a friendly challenge," said Kayce Beatty, 375th Medical Group Health and Wellness Center health fitness specialist. "The main goal is for everyone to achieve a healthier lifestyle. And, to get there we encourage healthy eating, exercising and having fun." Last year about 260 people participated in the Biggest Loser challenge and lost about 840 pounds as a group, according to Beatty. This year, the goal is to have more people participate and to lose over 1000 pounds. From Jan. 27-31, members were encouraged to stop by the HAWC and do an initial weigh-in to begin the challenge. Among those weighing-in was Lt. Col. Lorri Reed, 375th Medical Group, health care integrator. "We are doing this to improve our health and well-being," said Reed. To promote a healthy lifestyle the HAWC offers many classes, including a running clinic, strength training, and a healthy weight management course. Other courses are available as well.
