Legal office hosting information fair Published April 23, 2014 By Airman 1st Class Kiana Brothers 375th Air Mobility Wing Public Affairs SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. -- The 375th Air Mobility Wing Legal Office is hosting a legal information fair April 30 at 9 a.m. in honor of Law Day. Law Day is celebrated May 1 of each year since 1961 to help people appreciate their liberties and respect the law. "Law Day is a time-honored tradition here on Scott," said Capt. Erin Dixon. "This year, in celebration of the 50th Anniversaries of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965, the 2014 Law Day theme is American Democracy and the Rule of Law: Why Every Vote Matters." Law Day was established in 1958, by President Dwight D. Eisenhower, as a day of national dedication to the principles of government under law. In 1961, Congress, by joint resolution, designated May 1 as the official date for celebrating Law Day. The information fair will showcase the legal assistance services that the legal office offers. It provides notary, wills, advanced medical directives, powers of attorney, and legal assistance advice on many matters. Capt. Caroline Raines, the legal assistance chief, said, "We are also encouraging the schools and childcare centers to implement Law Day activities into their classrooms and daycare activities on May 1." The legal office and several community partners are opening their doors to show the community about all the legal office can do to assist. The base legal office, located in the 375th Air Mobility Wing headquarters building, military justice attorneys and paralegals provide legal advice to commanders and first sergeants on disciplinary issues. The operation law division takes care of deploying member's and their family's legal needs before, during and after the member departs. "The more people and organizations know what legal does and what community resources are available, the more they are in a position to make appropriate referrals, to help our Airmen, and to make an impact on mission readiness," said Raines.
