New turf field opening soon Published May 7, 2014 By Maj. Rett Rebe 375th Medical Group SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. -- With the fitness season in high gear, the base track and field is scheduled to open on approximately May 9 after construction and installation of artificial turf. This new playing surface will be home to intramural sports, unit physical training and personal workouts. About the new surface What is it? Artificial turf is a grass-like combination of synthetic fiber and rubber infill covering a hard packed surface. Health Impact Multiple studies have validated the safety of synthetic turf. Risks from inhalation, ingestion, and skin contact with turf are "below levels of concern." Sports Injuries In general, the risk of injury may be slightly lower than on natural grass. A 2004 NCAA study found that injury rates on natural grass were 4.4 percent compared to 3.5 percent on artificial turf. You may have heard of the term "turf toe," which is an injury to the base of the large toe which may occur due to repeatedly pushing off with the foot or running and jumping on hard surfaces. Heat injuries Artificial turf retains more heat from the sun than natural turf due to its component materials. Prudent precautions Take time to accommodate to the new surface. Before you exercise full tilt on any new surface warm up and perform light and moderate cutting/running movements to allow your body to adapt it. Hydrate and rest appropriately. Because it may be hotter on the artificial turf, allow for increased water breaks especially on a hot day. It may be preferable to use the new field during evening or morning hours. For competitive sports, molded cleats or screw-in cleats up to one-half inch are recommended for optimal traction. For casual use, cross trainer or running shoes provide adequate grip.
