The James Sports Center hosted a fitness fair May 9 for military members and civilians to meet with 30 vendors to discuss health and fitness.

"The importance of having the fitness fair is to emphasize that we have a community outside the base," said Glendora Brock, Sports and Fitness Center program director. "People don't know what's out there. If we have the fair, people can come and interact with the vendors, then they will know what is available to them."

Fitness fair attendees received free cholesterol, blood pressure and glucose checks, along with checking their risk for osteoporosis.

Linda Idoll, 375th Communications Squadron, said she has been coming to every fitness fair for the past 30 years.

"I come to these fairs because I'm concerned about my health, mainly my blood pressure," the 59-year-old said. "I would never check my blood pressure if it weren't for the fact that I come here because I get sidetracked. I was glad I came because I didn't realize my blood pressure is a little high; I would have carried on like nothing was wrong.
I think this fair is fantastic. Everybody gets so busy during the day, and they forget to take care of themselves."

In addition to the nurses performing basic health assessments, other vendors included dentistry offices, insurance companies, banking entities, an animal kennel, and a couple of chiropractic companies.

Tracy Currier, Life Spine clinic director, said she has enjoyed her second year at the Fitness Fair and interacting with Team Scott.

"All day, every day, they are keeping us safe," Currier said. "We want to make sure they are in good health. This was a great event because it is important to get the health information in one place, whether it is blood pressure or spinal health. Everyone legitimately wanted to be helped."
