New over-sized umbrellas provide shade at pool

The Fitness Center pool has installed new permanent umbrellas to provide shade to patrons enjoying the remaining summer days poolside at Scott Air Force Base.

The Fitness Center pool is especially susceptible to the heat, as it sits between parking areas with no natural shade available.

Doug Hartung, Outdoor Recreation director, said, "The shade umbrellas will benefit our valued customers who do not wish to be out in the sun, but still want to bring the families to the pool."

The pool now features six cantilever-type umbrellas, covering some of the pool deck, the baby pool sitting area, and over the eating area.  The umbrellas are installed from outside the fence around the pool and won't interfere with customers on the pool deck.

Hartung said the decision to purchase permanent umbrellas was made because the previous tabletop umbrellas have blown away and caused damage to other items at the pool.

Garry Green, Outdoor Recreation manager, said, "The response has been very positive."

Outdoor Recreation also brought in more seating to go beneath the umbrellas. It consists of long benches that would've otherwise sat abandoned at the now defunct Rod and Gun Club and Scott Lake, said Green.

Future improvements to the Fitness Center pool are being considered if additional funds become available.

The Fitness Center pool is the only place to enjoy an outdoor aquatic experience at the base. They offer a variety of activities from swim lessons, a swim team, and pool parties to free adult early morning lap swim time from 6 to 7 a.m.

The staff is comprised of certified lifeguards to ensure the utmost safety for Scott members and their families.

The Fitness Center pool is scheduled to close Sept. 1 for the season.
