375th Comptroller Squadron welcomes new commander Published Aug. 13, 2014 By Staff Sgt. Maria Bowman 375th Air Mobility Wing Public Affairs SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. -- Maj. Shay Edwards is the new 375th Comptroller Squadron commander. Q: What led you to joining the Air Force? A: After college, I worked in human resources in my hometown of Wichita, Kansas. I also took an active role in my community by volunteering with various organizations. In early 2000, I met several personnel officers stationed at McConnell Air Force Base. After learning how they were able to serve our country and directly contribute the protection of the United States and our citizens, I knew I wanted to join the Air Force. Q: What is your favorite Air Force memory? A: My promotion to major was significantly important to me. Not because of the increase in rank or pay, but because it was the first military event my mother and sister were able to attend. I was honored that my long-time mentor, Col. Chip Fulghum, officiated the ceremony. In addition, two of my closest friends attended and the support from within the Assistant Secretary, Financial Management and Comptroller staff was overwhelming. To me, they represented everyone I had worked with throughout my previous assignments. Q: What is your leadership philosophy? A: I tend to lean towards the philosophy of servant leadership. My primary role is to serve others within my organization while entrusting them to accomplish the mission. It's always a delicate balance between taking care of people and accomplishing the mission. I believe we can accomplish both taking care of our people and the mission, while having fun. Q: What can the 375th CPTS's Airmen expect from you? A: As a commander, my first responsibility is to the Airmen within the 375th Comptroller Squadron. By providing the right training, tools and support, the mission will be accomplished. I believe in honest, open communication from the top-down and from the bottom-up. Additionally, they can rely on me to make a decision, be accountable and maintain consistency. Q: What is your favorite part of being a commander? A: One of my favorite parts of being a commander is the opportunity to develop and mentor Airmen. Additionally, I learn something new each and every day from the people throughout the squadron, making me a better leader and Airman. Q: What advice do you have for those under your leadership? A: A positive attitude is the key to mission success. Let's work together to develop creative solutions, accomplish the mission and continue the path to future successes. Q: What do you look forward to during your command? A: I look forward to getting to know each Airman and their families. I also look forward to building on our organizational strengths, providing world class service and decision support to our customers throughout the installation, while continuing the trajectory towards becoming the Air Force's showcase comptroller squadron.
