Della Almind took first place in the base-level AMC Icon competition Aug. 15. She sang, "The Girl in 14G," by Kristin Chenoweth.

She said she began singing at a young age with her parents support. Recently she was a member of O'Fallon High School show choir, drama, acapella group and she won Chamber Choir Queen.

"Singing always provides me with a way to reach out and connect with people's emotions," said Almind, an 18-year-old dependent.

The winner takes home a $500 dollar prize, but instead of keeping it to herself, Almind said she plans to give it to her parents.

"My parents are my musical influence," she said. "And, they have paid for so much of my hobby its time I give back to them."

Almind is beginning her Freshman year at Saint Louis University this month, majoring in pre-med biology. She plans to continue singing when she can.

Placing second was Senior Airman Tim Sentz, who because he was the only military member to place will compete in the annual Air Mobility Command Icon finals in October. Andrew Reed, also a dependent, placed third.
