PASS workshops Published Oct. 15, 2014 By Senior Airman Sarah Hall-Kirchner 375th Air Mobility Wing Public Affairs SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. -- Navigating the Individualized Education Plan/504 (Physical Disabilities) Plan Parents of children with disabilities need information about the specific disabilities which they face, special education laws, and information concerning the development of their child's IEP. Parents also need support and encouragement as they face the everyday joys and challenges of raising children with disabilities. The program: · Helps parents feel more comfortable and knowledgeable in the IEP Plan process; · Helps parents understand goals, objectives and benchmarks; · Helps parents understand their rights in the IEP process and strategies to become effective partners with their child's providers/teachers; · Provides tips and strategies to help parents advocate for their children, as well as the steps how to work through the special education system in a positive and productive way; and · Defines many acronyms found in the IDEA 2004 (Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act of 2004) and explain their meaning and relevance to parents' participation in special education as partners on their children's IEP team. Getting into college or technical school and preparing for high school The program: · Helps parents understand the importance of and how they can help military-connected or other highly mobile students maneuver their way through the intricacies of grades 6-12 and post-secondary choices; · Helps parents understand the significant areas of importance for academic preparation separated into middle school, freshman year, sophomore year, junior year, and senior year; · Helps parents understand issues associated with moving to a new school, academic preparation, paying for college, selecting the right college for their children, as well as vocational-technical or career-technical information, SAT and ACT exams, college visits and virtual campus tours, and ROTC, JROTC, and academy options; · Provides parents with internet resources to help prepare their children for career and college preparation. Tracking your child's education The program help parents understand: · The importance of establishing and maintaining a portfolio for each of their children; · How a portfolio can help school personnel in placement of their children and gain proper educational opportunities for their children; · The importance of getting recommendations from their children's prior teachers to aid in proper placement; · Creating a portfolio for each of their children and distinguish between what should be included in each and what should be excluded; and · That portfolios must be systematic, organized evidence which can be used by educational professionals and students to measure growth of knowledge, skills, and attitudes. Jumpstart to kindergarten The program · Helps new Scott families make school registration easy and stress-free; · Is designed to help parents and military-connected children achieve a successful start to their educational and school journey; · Helps parents understand how to register their children in school and documents required; · Helps parents understand the importance of early literacy activities for school preparation; and · Provides parents with practical, inexpensive ideas families can use to help spark their children's natural desire to learn.
