Air Mobility Command develops new interactive map Published Feb. 11, 2015 By Senior Airman Tristin English 375th Air Mobility Wing Public Affairs SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. -- Maps are a tool every military base uses daily. Air Mobility Command has created a global map called AMC.maps that can be used as a universal tool across many job fields. "Everybody has a site with maps on it," said Andree Swanson, AMC Communication and Education Training Officer. "The key, we found, in the Air Mobility Command integration program is doing the training on a global scale, because we have a mission that is global. It goes to Europe, Asia, and other countries, so our maps tend to be very robust. We have a lot of information going in them." The information is integrated together, so any data on the maps can be turned on or off. The maps can track and show the path of a hurricane, show aircraft that are ready for take-off or in maintenance status, and it will even track the weather systems. "It can be used as an emergency response tool helping members keep track of what's going on around them during harsh weather conditions, active shooters, exercises, and war-time," she said. The training for the maps is done through Defense Connect Online and is open to anyone who has a common access card and access to an official military website. Registration is required for any of the maps. "We can also develop a map that is not available to CAC holders. We are working on AMC's rodeo map, an exercise held at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington, so we are developing a map specifically for them and that will have the flight route information for participants to see," said Swanson. "We have the ability to do what is needed by the user." The maps can be used for training, a facility locator, or someone can even draw a map and send it to someone else. "Two years ago when I came into this program, I didn't even know it existed, and I had to learn it," said Swanson. "It is a capability much like task management tool or SharePoint. You can't just go in and start using it, you have to practice and practice. So if you want to get the best out of the program I highly recommend taking the training. There are so many tools and capabilities on here. We really want people to learn the maps, so they can figure out what it can and can't do."
