The Air Force's calendar phone app just got a new update, allowing owners to plug in "quick call" links, making it even more user-friendly.

It's been roughly three years since the creation of "My Military Communities," or MyMC2 for short. It's the mobile application that gives people a calender view of what's happening at various military bases.

It was created by Scott's 375th Communication Support Squadron software engineering flight, and since its release, MyMC2 has expanded to 50 Air Force bases and one Army installation with a potential reach of 1.7 million military, civilian, contractors and family members.

"Users can now have immediate access to more quick call or emergency numbers," said Staff Sgt. Aaron Braswell, 375th CSPTS application development supervisor. "This will allow users to get immediate help in emergency situations, whether they are contemplating suicide, have been sexually assaulted, or are intoxicated and have no ride home. This update is potentially life-saving for members across the Department of Defense."

MyMC2 is the first mobile application in the Air Force that puts a list of events, organizations, and services at a base on a smartphone or tablet. The app pulls information from the multiple organizational Facebook pages that are officially associated with a base and consolidates them into one place.

The update also allows users to find events within the app easier by searching for words that were used as hashtags in the body or description of the event.

Airman 1st Class John Durdahl, 375th CSPTS application development programmer, said, "This will improve the user's ability to get access to the information they are looking for in a timely manner."

In the three months it took to complete the process of upgrading the application, the team rewrote code for both the Android and iOS mobile app, as well as the administration page.

Braswell said, "This was the hardest part of the process for me. It was tough to maintain consistency between the Android and iOS version of the app due to the various technologies involved."

Durdahl said that increasing the team's knowledge of the different coding languages pushed them to complete the project.

"I have learned to write code in a new language and have gained valuable work experience," he said. "It also gives me a sense of pride knowing my work can have an impact on a DoD-wide scale."

To download the app, just search "My Military Communities" or "MyMC2." In addition, the MyMC2 Facebook page is a forum where people can ask questions and provide feedback about the app: www.facebook.com/MyMC2support.

For bases that don't have the app, just have the Public Affairs office contact Staff Sgt. Aaron Braswell at (618) 256-1829 to get it set up. For Scott AFB organizations that do not qualify for a Facebook page but would like to advertise their event on the app, please send a request to www.375amw.pa@us.af.mil.
