Airmen get advice during ‘speed mentoring’

The NCO Council sponsored a speed mentoring event, called "Real Talk, Real Quick," Jan. 22 at the Scott Event Center for junior enlisted service members.

"It's a great way to bridge the gap for those who don't have a mentor so they can get a quick rundown of information from experienced leaders," said Tech. Sgt. Seth Miller, president of the NCO council.

About 20 NCOs, Senior NCOs, first sergeants, wing staff and officers served as mentors in this "pressure free" forum. They briefly introduced themselves and then Airmen were given five minutes per mentor to ask questions with a two-minute rest in between before switching.

"You can get more out of speed mentoring because you can get multiple perspectives at one single place, helping you learn more in a short amount of time," said Miller. "The goal is that Airmen not only leave with information, but also a mentor who they can turn to as well."

Senior Airman Hermon Gillum, Air Mobility Command, said, "I thought the event was put together well; there was a wide variety of people to talk to, and you were able to get different people's perspective."

Miller said the forum was valuable, adding that "we can all benefit from an event like this. We plan to do it again and with everyone's feedback it can only get better."
