Public Notice: Five-Year Review of environmental remedies Published Feb. 16, 2022 By 375th Air Mobility Wing Public Affairs Office SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. -- The United States Army Corps of Engineers, Louisville District, and United States Air Force, in conjunction with the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency, are initiating the fourth Five-Year Review of environmental remedies implemented at Scott Air Force Base, Illinois. The purpose of a Five-Year Review is to evaluate the implementation and performance of a remedy in order to determine if the remedy is or will be protective of human health and the environment. Five-Year Reviews also identify issues discovered during the review, if any, and provide recommendations to address them. The focus of the fourth Five-Year Review includes evaluation of the following 11 Installation Restoration Program Sites: LF-01 Former Base Landfill: The selected remedy for this site is a landfill cover system, surface soil and sediment excavation, and on-site disposal. OT-07 Former Location of two Above Ground Petroleum, Oil, and Lubricant Storage Tanks, and Oil Water Separator, and a Sludge Weathering Lagoon: The selected remedy for this site is monitored natural attenuation (MNA) and land use controls (LUCs). The remedy enhancement consists of the addition of a limited in-situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) application. SA-26 Former Coal Pile Storage Areas: The selected remedy for this site is MNA, long term monitoring (LTM), and LUCs. SS-05 Bulk Fuel Storage: The selected remedy includes MNG including groundwater sampling, oil water separator abandonment and ISCO curtain system installation. SS-06 Former Army and Air Force Exchange Service Gas Station: The selected remedy includes excavation of soil, collection and analysis of confirmation soil samples, dispersement of Oxygen Releasing Compound following excavation, placement and compaction of backfill, ISCO of the impacted soil within the utility corridor, and site restoration activities. SS-14 Consolidated Aircraft Maintenance Squadron Area: The selected remedy for this site is bio stimulation and MNA. SS-15 Former Defense reutilization and Marketing Office Salvage Yard: The selected remedy for this site is excavation to residential criteria with off-site disposal, LTM and MNA. SS-16 Former Vehicle Maintenance Facility: The selected remedy for this site is source removal, soil excavation, bio stimulation, off-site disposal, and MNA. SS-25A Former Cardinal Creek Village: The selected remedy for this site is LUCs, excavation and off-site disposal, and MNA. SS-25B Former Pagelow Housing: The selected remedy for this site consists of shallow subsurface soil removal and LUCs. SS-29 Petroleum Spill Sites: The selected remedy for this site is MNA and institutional controls.
