Public Notice: Public Comment Period for Proposed Plans at Scott AFB, Site SS031

The United States Air Force (USAF) invites the public to review and comment on the Proposed Plan (PP) for the preferred alternative of No Further Action (NFA) for Installation Restoration Program (IRP) Site SS031 at Scott Air Force Base (AFB), Illinois.

A Remedial Investigation (RI) report was finalized in May 2021 for SS031.  The RI provided a summary of the site history which included results from the RI completed in 2019 through 2020.  The RI concluded that soil concentrations at SS031 are not the source of elevated manganese concentrations in groundwater.  Manganese is a groundwater contaminant at IRP Site SS005, which is a fuel site located upgradient of SS031.  The SS031 RI and PP both recommended NFA for SS031 and to include groundwater monitoring well SS31-MW03 to the SS005 monitoring program.  The recommended alternative is technically and administratively feasible and protective of human health and the environment.  The USAF has selected the preferred alternative for SS031 and the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency concurs with USAF’s selection of NFA.

The formal comment period for the SS031 PP starts on February 28, 2022, and ends on April 1, 2022.  Written comments will be accepted at any time during the formal comment period.  Additionally, a public meeting may be held for SS031 if requested by the public.  To submit your comments, please contact 375th AMW Public Affairs at:
