Air Force Week to begin at Scott Published Aug. 3, 2006 By Air Mobility Command 375th Airlift Wing Public Affaird SCOTT AFB, Ill. --- 8/3/06 -- If you start feeling a little blue in the next few days, that's understandable. A number of mayors, administrators and councils in the St. Louis metropolitan area have chosen to honor the men and women of the U.S. Air Force by proclaiming Aug. 7 to 13 as "Air Force Week" in their respective cities, villages and towns. Mayor Francis Slay will follow suit Monday when he signs a decree proclaiming the period Aug. 7 to 13 as "Air Force Week" in the City of St. Louis. It's all part of an effort by the Air Force to help raise public awareness of the service's operations, capabilities, and support to the Global War on Terror, showcase its Airmen, and thank its friends in the area for their heartfelt support of its men and women. In fact, the Air Force's Chief of Staff, General T. Michael Moseley, invites everyone in the greater St. Louis area to come out and enjoy the Air Force Week activities. "These activities provide a remarkable opportunity for the Air Force to demonstrate the pride and professionalism of the greatest air and space force the world has ever known," he said. Air Force Week events will actually kick off Sunday in downtown St. Louis, when an Airman from Scott Air Force Base throws out the first pitch at the St. Louis Cardinals game against the Milwaukee Brewers and F-15s from the 131st Fighter Wing at Lambert Field fly over Busch Stadium. Other events scheduled during the week include: ■ Appearances at the St. Louis Science Center by a NASA Astronaut on Tuesday, a pilot from the IMAX movie "Fighter Pilot: Operation RED FLAG" on Wednesday, and members of the Air Force's precision flying team, the Thunderbirds, on Thursday. "Fighter Pilot" will also be shown twice daily at the center. ■ A "Salute to the Air Force" Tuesday evening at the Gateway Grizzlies game against the Traverse City Beach Bums in Sauget, which will include a C-17 flyover. Admission to the game is free for all active duty military, retirees and their family members. ■ A flyover of downtown St. Louis, including some of its key landmarks such as The Arch and Busch Stadium, on Thursday. The flyover willinclude a B-2 Bomber, a C- 130J, a KC-135 and the Thunderbirds. The week will be capped off Saturday and Sunday with an Open House and Air Fest at Scott. In addition to the Thunderbirds, the Open House and Air Fest will include fighter and transport aircraft flybys, parachute jumps, numerous static displays, and other demonstrations. The event is free and open to the public.
