'Campus Concept' is a hit Published April 25, 2007 By Airman 1st Class Brian Butkus 375th Airlift Wing Public Affairs 2007/04/26 -- Local mayors, chamber members and 375th Airlift Wing leadership gathered Friday in Dormitory 1820's day room to discuss the transitioning of Scott's dorms into a "campus concept." "The main focus of 'campus concept' is to start our young Airmen off on the right foot," said Col. Alan Hunt, 375th Airlift Wing commander. "When I attended school at the University of Notre Dame, my dormitory experience was incredible. I want our dorms to have the same positive impression on our Airmen as they would get attending a college campus." The first step in the transition is changing the dorms from a number to a name. "When our Airmen talk about where they live I want them to be able to say O'Fallon Hall, Mascoutah Hall or Belleville Hall, not some building number," said Colonel Hunt. "We want servicemembers who live in the dorms to have pride in their place of residence," he said. By naming dorms after local communities, leadership expects to begin a two-way road into improving community relationships with younger Airmen and further strengthening the dormitory lifestyle. "I personally think the 'campus concept' is a fantastic idea," said Mayor Jerry Daugherty of Mascoutah. "As a retired chief master sergeant, I remember what dorm life used to be like. Things have improved a lot since I was in and I look forward to being a part of improving them even more," he said. The three existing dorms will be named after O'Fallon, Mascoutah and Belleville, with the future dormitory being named after Shiloh. On May 17 the naming will be made official with a proclamation signing and the Dormitory Olympics following.
