USO helps reign in the season Published Dec. 14, 2007 By Senior Airman Brian Butkus 375th Airlift Wing Public Affairs SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. -- Supporting the U.S. military is the number one priority of the USO, this was evident when servicemembers from Joint Total Force Scott and the Metro East area attended the 'Santa Express' event Saturday. The journey began for Joint Total Force Scott members at the Shiloh/Scott Metro station where USO volunteers dressed as elves handed out train tickets to those wishing to attend the event. Once families received their tickets, patrons took the train to Union Station where various holiday activities were set up and young and old alike could ring in the holiday cheer. "Hosting this event for our servicemembers is truly a heartwarming experience," said Kathy O'Connor, event executive director. "This event is only a small way to show due appreciation for all the military does for our country." Upon arriving at Union Station, families were taken to a reception area where they received a map of the day's events, various USO goodies and coupons to various stores in the mall. "As a servicemember I take advantage of the USO whenever I have the chance," said Maj. Jason Palma, Air Mobility Command pilot. "This is my first year attending this event, and I have to say it's absolutely great. I encourage all those who didn't have a chance to make it this year to try and get out next year." Some of the various events that took place throughout the day included; a performance by the U.S. Band of MidAmerica, a night before Christmas production put on by the Fabulous Fox Theatre, holiday arts and crafts and a chance for families to take pictures with Santa and Mrs. Claus. "When we arrived here it was truly overwhelming," said Army Reserve Master Sgt. Angelina Craigen, Army reservist. "The USO has been nothing but supportive throughout my career and this event just proves my point. I really appreciate the fact that they have so many things for my children to do throughout the morning too." As an added bonus all the children who attended the event had the opportunity to pick between various gifts courtesy of the USO.
