AMC, USTRANSCOM transform information technology processes

Air Mobility Command's information technology responsibilities are expanding with the assumption of responsibility of one of Joint Total Force Scott's larger units' networks.

An agreement signed by communications leadership Dec. 21 authorizes AMC operational responsibility for the U.S. Transportation Command classified network

"Consolidating operations makes a lot of sense," said Brig. Gen. Rick Dinkins, USTRANSCOM Command, Control, Communications and Computer Systems director. "Here at Scott, we truly have an opportunity to set the standard for joint basing and transparency amongst USTRANSCOM components and eventually the entire department."

Increased operational complexity and the need for enhanced security, as well as reduced funding and manpower, has put a new emphasis on taking a broader approach to traditional organizational communications networks.

Earlier this year, the 375th Communications Squadron became the information technology provider for the Army's Surface Distribution and Deployment Command, which relocated to Scott.

Joint Total Force Scott's communications and information personnel are continuing consolidation efforts by merging USTRANSCOM's IT network into the Air Force enterprise.

Working together to bring this initiative to fruition are USTRANSCOM Command, Control, Communications and Computer System; AMC Communication and Information; Detachment 3 of Air Combat Command's 561st Network Operations Squadron; the 375th Communications Group and the Air Force Communications Agency.

"The efforts of the entire Scott team are paving the way for future joint service consolidation efforts," said Col. Brad Ashley, AMC Communication and Information commander. "We are leaning out our processes, and we know they will yield savings."

While the ultimate architecture and design will primarily be part of the Air Force enterprise, Joint Total Force Scott is working diligently to incorporate "best of breed" network processes and capabilities to pave the way for future joint network consolidations.

"We have enjoyed working closely with our USTRANSCOM customers on this vital consolidation effort," said Colonel Ashley.

The team's efforts are expected to remain transparent to USTRANSCOM customers.
