A Joint Total Force Scott member set a new American open powerlifting record at the USA Powerlifting Missouri State and Ozark Open on March 8th in St. Louis.

Brady Stewart, 375th Comptroller Squadron financial analyst victorious eight days earlier in the powerlifting competition at the Arnold Sports Festival in Columbus, Ohio, bench pressed 578 pounds to break the previous record of 575.4 pounds.

To break the record, Mr. Stewart underwent an intense training schedule.

"I train six days per week," he said. Four of those days are strict intense weight training sessions where I train both upper and lower body each day. These sessions can last two to three hours. Two of those days are designated for recovery and conditioning and last about an hour."

The 25-year-old McKendree College graduate and Lebanon resident competes in the 242-pound weight class.

"I credit a large portion of my success to my training partners Scott Baquet, Shaun Bales and Tim Hobby, along with a number of variables," said Mr. Stewart. "I also believe that any success comes with hard work and consistency. I've gone through many weeks where I have posted more than 57.5 tons, or 115,000 pounds of volume, (this does not include warming up) ... it sounds like a lot, but most people don't realize how much work that really is and that's only on days that I train with weights. I never miss workouts and if I am sick and can't train, I'll cover it the next day and double up workouts if I have to."

Mr. Stewart is now in preparation for the USAPL 2008 National Open that will be held in Killeen, Texas, in June.

"I will be preparing a little differently for the 2008 USAPL Men's National Open," said Mr. Stewart. "I'll pay more attention to diet as I feel that is my weakest link. I will improve my work capacity through increasing training volume. Newer things that I'll try are sumo deadlifts, heavy chain squats, longer running periods, active release therapy, and I'll try to control the amounts of stress during training."

During the USAPL 2008 National Open he is setting even higher goals for himself.
"My next goal is to break the National and American records again and bench press at or more than 600 pounds," said Mr. Stewart. "I have hopes to total at or more than 2,000 pounds with a 725-to 750-pound squat, a 600-pound plus bench press and a 675-to 700-pound deadlift."

USA Powerlifting is the leading powerlifting organization in the United States and is a member of the International Powerlifting Federation, the governing body of powerlifting internationally. The IPF is comprised of member federations from 83 countries on six continents.
