A member of Scott Air Force Base recently won an award for his support of the Society of American Military Engineers mission.

Maj. Patrick Miller, Air Mobility Command Expeditionary Combat Support Division Strategic Plans officer, was awarded the Young Member Medal for his accomplishments of the SAME mission over his period of membership.

According to their Web site, SAME is the premier professional engineering association in the United States for connecting architects, engineers and builders in the public sector and private industry, uniting them to improve individual and collective capabilities for national security.

Major Miller first joined the society upon learning about it as a student in 1996 and, upon commissioning, joined the Space Coast Post.

Throughout his military career Major Miller's dedication to the society shone through when he was assigned to Lajes Field, Azores. Membership and opportunities for members of SAME were limited at Lajes, but this did not discourage Major Miller from the society, and only made his dedication that much stronger.

"Throughout my time at Lajes, I became a member of SAME at large and secured sponsorship to the 2001 national convention," said Major Miller. "While being a member at large, I was afforded the opportunity to participate in the first-ever Air Force company grade officer mentoring session."

Major Miller continued his participation in the society at large until 2003 when he returned stateside and became a member of the Kittyhawk Post.

It was his stateside participation where his membership really began to shine.

This became evident in 2006 when he was elected to the society's Board of Directors and also served as a member of the Executive Committee.

"Major Millers dedication to the society and its mission is clear," said Cheryl Bievenue, Scott Field Post president. "His past performances illustrate his passion. His election to the Board of Direction and selection as National Young Member Council Chair demonstrates his investment in the future. He is today's society leader, tomorrows fellow and 2007's Young Member Medal recipient."
