High Flight lands at Scott Published April 16, 2008 By Monte Miller 375th Airlift Wing Public Affairs SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. -- Captains from all over Air Mobility Command traveled to Scott Air Force Base last week as part of the annual High Flight program. About 90 participants spent the week here as part of the leadership program and spent the week getting an inside look at AMC and what their command is all about. High Flight is a highly selective opportunity providing four to eight-year captains from the Air Force active duty, Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve and civilians an orientation on key issues impacting air mobility around the globe. "This is a four-star program hosted by General Lichte," Maj. Will Wade, Air Mobility Command commander's action group special actions officer, said. "It's a staff orientation that develops them as current and future leaders. This is also the first year that spouses were invited to attend the program." The participant's four days at Scott were spent in several conferences each day that covered a wide spectrum of subjects from legal issues to strategic plans. During their time here they were also given tours of select command components, including the AMC headquarters and the Tanker Airlift Control Center. "We are the only active duty major command that still has this course," Major Wade explained. "We take a lot of pride in that fact and that is also open to guard, reserve and civilians," He added that all of the participants in the High Flight program came highly recommended by their wing commanders or major command commanders. "It is highly selective," he said. "It gives a familiarization of what is happening at headquarters and with the leadership and how what they do at their home bases plays into the role of the big Air Force." The program also gave the attendees a chance to network with their colleagues and also with the AMC commanders, and get their perspective of the role they are playing in global air mobility. "They all enjoyed hearing from the directors," Major Wade said. "For Lt. Gen. Kelly (AMC vice commander), it was his last time to brief before he retires and he gave them a heartfelt welcome." Other senior AMC leaders including AMC Commander General Arthur J. Lichte, Command Chief Master Sergeant Joseph Barron and Command Chaplain (Col.) Brian Van Sickle also briefed the high flighters. The group also attended a leadership seminar that featured Brig. Gen. Barbara Faulkenberry, AMC deputy director of strategic plans, requirements and programs, as the keynote speaker. "The overall intent is to give them a headquarters level perspective," Major Wade said. "It gives them a high understanding of what we do and how we do it." Major Wade also wished to publicly thank the 375th Airlift Wing for its outstanding logistical support of the High Flight program.
