USO program helps keep families close Published April 30, 2008 By Senior Airman Brian Butkus 375th Airlift Wing Public Affairs SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. -- Joint Total Force Scott's newest family oriented program, United Through Reading, kicked off April 24 at 11:30 a.m., at the Base Library. The USO of Missouri, Base Library and the Airman and Family Readiness Center launched the new program aimed at keeping deploying servicembers and their families closer during their months apart. "United Through Reading allows deploying Airmen the opportunity to record themselves reading books on video prior to their departure," said Sandy Koontz, Base Library director. "After filming, a DVD is produced and sent to their home, along with a copy of the book that was read during the taping. The idea behind the program is that once the parent is gone, the child can still see the absent family member and read along with them on the DVD." Those who attended the kick-off event were treated to music and food by the mobile USO. The library also hosted its first patron for their new program. "When I first heard about this program I was really excited because I am getting ready to leave for a deployment, and what better way to still be a part of my family while gone," said Tech. Sgt. Troy Johnson, Scott's United Through Reading's first patron. "I really think all those who have families and are getting ready for a deployment should look into this great new program." The program can be used by siblings, grandparents, cousins, aunts, uncles and other parental figures. Regular tapings will be held at the Base Library every second and fourth Thursday of the month from 2 to 6 p.m.
