American Red Cross Adult Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation classes are underway at the Unites States Transportation Command, as members of the command prepare to implement a Public Access Defibrillator Program.

The classes, conducted by Army Lt. Col. Steve Green of USTRANSCOM, consist of approximately five hours of classroom instruction including study, discussion, video segments, hands-on practice and skills testing. When a student successfully completes the course, they are certified in adult CPR for one year.

"Our goal is to train 100 USTRANSCOM military and DoD workers in this important life saving skill," Colonel Green said. "This training is a key component of our Public Access Defibrillator Program. We will soon begin installing 10 defibrillators in USTRANSCOM buildings on Scott Air Force Base.

"Although we hope no one working at or visiting our facilities ever has a cardiac emergency," Colonel Green continued, "this program will greatly enhance a victim's chance of survival by providing near-immediate response until the arrival of emergency medical services personnel."

There are spaces for 10 students in each class. The next training dates are Friday, July 16, July 30 and Aug. 20. For more information, call Colonel Green at 229-0101.
Colonel Green is the USTRANSCOM Public Access Defibrillator Program coordinator and is also a volunteer instructor with the Scott Air Force Base Red Cross Office.
