Tuesday, Illinois American Water will temporarily change the disinfectant used in the water as they always do at this time of year.

Instead of using chloramines, they will be using free chlorine. The base will be notified when Illinois American Water goes back to chloramines in approximately four to six weeks.

Due to the temporary change in the type of chlorine, users may experience a more noticeable chlorine taste or odor in their tap water for the next few weeks. There is no reason for concern. This is due to the switch only.

This "clean up" procedure ensures that water lines and pipes are pure and clean. It's done every year at this time.

For those who do not like the chlorine taste or odor, pouring water into a pitcher and letting it set for a few minutes will allow the chlorine taste and odor will dissipate on its own.

While on free chlorine, annual distribution system flushing will occur from Aug. 25 to Oct. 1. This is an annual maintenance program that allows the water company to continue to deliver high-quality water service to the Scott community.

This annual procedure enhances continued water quality and checks fire hydrant operation to maintain public safety.

When American Water-Scott crews are working in your area, you may draw some discolored tap water temporarily. Despite appearance, the water will be safe to drink. Allowing the water to run for a short time, approximately five to 10 minutes, should clear the water.

Clothes can become discolored if washed during flushing. Best times for washing clothes will be from dusk to dawn and after letting the water run until clear.
