Air Force members to wear blues Mondays

A recent announcement from the Air Force chief of staff directed a change of duty uniform for all Airmen in appropriate career fields and environments.

Effective this past Monday, the uniform of the day every Monday is now the blue uniform. No specific combination has been directed.

"During our recent 4-Star summit, we had several discussions concerning our uniforms, including the wear of our blue uniform on a routine basis," said Gen. Norton Schwartz, U.S. Air Force chief of staff, in a memorandum for all Air Force personnel, signed Sept. 4. "We all agreed that part of our image, culture and professionalism is instilled in our blues."

This decision was made as a result of the general turn the Air Force has made away from wearing the uniform on a regular basis.

"Prior to the events of September 11, 2001, it was common practice for a majority of Air Force members to wear the blue uniform as their duty uniform," he said. "While (major command) policies often differed, it was also common practice to wear utility uniforms one day a week.

"Post 9/11 we've moved away from our blue uniforms almost altogether and have transformed into an Air Force that wears our utility uniform on a daily basis," he added.

The change was reiterated by a memorandum to group and squadron commanders from 375th Airlift Wing Command Col. Gary Goldstone Sept. 5.

"Unit commanders have authority to adjust this policy to meet direct mission requirements," Colonel Goldstone states in the memorandum.

Examples of fitting requirements include exercises, flight line duties, etc. Additionally, the change does not apply to Air Force members in the area of responsibility.
