Speed limits in housing being enforced Published Sept. 26, 2008 By Monte Miller 375th Airlift Wing Public Affairs SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. -- If you're a frequent driver in any of the Scott Air Force Base housing areas, slow it down. In recent weeks, the 375th Security Forces Squadron has seen an increase in reports of speeding in all of the base housing areas. Because of this, there will be an increased law enforcement presence in those areas. "There are a lot of kids playing outside and we've had calls about cars speeding," said Staff Sgt. David Arreola, 375th Security Forces Squadron NCOIC of police services. "It's more of a deterrent than enforcement. When people see a blue and white Security Forces vehicle they will slow down. We'll be stepping it up for now until further notice." Sergeant Arreola explained the speed limit in all base housing areas is posted at 20 miles per hour, but people have been driving 25 to 30 miles per hour or more in those areas. "One of our main focus areas will be Patriots Drive near the school," Sergeant Arreola said. "The speed limit in that area is 15 mph in the school zone. People may not be used to school being back in session and there being a lot more kids in that area." Security forces is responsible for patrolling and enforcing speed limits in all but one of the Scott housing areas including Patriots Landing, Galaxy, Shiloh East and Colonial. The Lincoln's Landing housing area is patrolled by a combination of St. Clair County Sheriff's department and the Mascoutah Police Department. Sergeant Arreola also stressed to drivers not to use their cell phones while driving on base because it is not only against the law, but is also a distraction that may lead to speeding or even striking a child while inattentive. Seatbelt safety is another focus for security forces and there are plans for seatbelt compliance checkpoints in October. Also in October, Sergeant Arreola is seeking volunteers for 'Goblin Patrol', which will be conducted on Halloween. "You don't have to be a security forces member," Sergeant Arreola said. "Anybody that wants to donate an hour of their time to help keep the kids safe on Halloween." If interested in helping with 'Goblin Patrol,' contact Sergeant Areola at 256-6010.
