Airman's Attic reopens

SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. --  With a snip of the scissors Scott's Airman's Attic reopened last week in a new and improved location.

The ribbon cutting was attended by 375th Airlift Wing leadership along with many of the very people that benefit from the service, the enlisted force.

"This was really a base wide effort," said Airman's Attic manager Chief Master Sgt. (ret.) Gene Collins, who has been involved with the attic for more than four years. "I'm thankful to the wing leadership and everyone that came out today."

Even though he is no longer in the military, Mr. Collins looks at the Airman's Attic as a way to continue being a good Wingman.

"I've been in the military so many years, it's all I know," he explained. "I want to do anything that helps out the Airmen, especially the younger ones."

The renovations of Bldg. 533, where the Airman's Attic is now located, took about a month and a half and was done entirely by Joint Total Force volunteers from all over base in addition to the 10 core civilian volunteers.

375th Airlift Wing commander, Col. Gary Goldstone, thanked the volunteers and said the Airman's Attic ensures quality of life.

"Even the four-star generals rely on the Airman's Attic," Colonel Goldstone said. "It is truly about taking care of the Airmen and their mission capability. It takes a lot of volunteer effort to make this gem what it is."

375th Airlift Wing command chief, Chief Master Sgt. James Suttles, spoke at the ribbon cutting ceremony and compared the service and tradition of the Airman's Attic with the Airmen's Creed.

"It is truly service before self," he said. "It is also a great example to how we take care of our Airmen here and never leave an Airman behind. Mr. Collins has done what others thought were impossible. He took an already great program and made it greater with the help of his team."

The Airman's Attic is now located in Bldg. 533 in the old Pinnacle Housing maintenance office. The staff is in the process of working with the 375th Civil Engineer Squadron to establish an official street address.

The Airman's Attic is open to enlisted personnel ranks E-6 and below and their family members.

Normal hours of operation are 9-11 a.m. Tuesday and Thursday and 9 a.m. to noon the first Saturday of the month.

Donations to the Airman's attic can be made from 8:30-11:30 a.m. Tuesday and Thursday and 8:30 a.m. to noon the first Saturday of each month.
