Air Force GLSC welcomes new commander Published Nov. 21, 2008 By Monte Miller 375th Airlift Wing Public Affairs SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. -- Once again, Scott was in the Air Force spotlight last week as two more stars were added to the ever growing constellation. Maj. Gen. Gary T. McCoy assumed command of the Air Force Global Logistics Support Center from Col. H. Brent Baker, who has served since the center was originally erected at Scott in late March. The change of command was presided over by Gen. Bruce Carlson, Air Force Materiel Command commander. "About a month ago, I returned from the AOR," General Carlson said in his address during the ceremony. "Your support is felt over there everyday. Colonel Baker has built a highly skilled staff from ground zero and I am extremely proud of the men and women that stood up this command." General Carlson added because of the increased age of aircraft and the high tempo missions around the world, the movement of parts and a supply chain is very important. Before he officially passed the guidon, Colonel Baker made a few remarks, in which he praised his team at the GLSC and thanked them for all of their hard work over the past year and a half. "Today is a bittersweet day," he said. "Giving up the reigns of this organization is extremely hard. This has been a great opportunity to stand up something new. I couldn't have done it without the support of my team and their 'can-do' attitude. This has never been about me, it was the team. They made a tough job an easy one and I never once dreaded coming in to work." Colonel Baker then turned his attention to his successor and said it is a great pleasure of his to stay on at the GLSC as vice commander. "I'm sure General McCoy will take this organization to even greater heights," Colonel Baker said. "I'm excited to see the GLSC take another step on its evolutionary journey." After the ceremonial guidon pass from General Carlson, General McCoy took the podium and stressed his commitment to the standards already set by the GLSC staff. "I'm honored and grateful to be a part of the Air Force's premier supply chain management organization," General McCoy said. "My wife and I look forward to being a part of Team Scott and the community." General McCoy comes to Scott and the GLSC from Headquarters Air Force Materiel. Command, where he served as Director of Logistics and Sustainment. "Since the day I entered the Air Force, I've asked for only one thing. The opportunity to serve," General McCoy said. "I was always told not to make promises you can't keep. I promise to lead, follow and listen. I also promise to balance life and career. We will work as a team with dignity, respect and we will accomplish the mission." AFGLSC is the Air Force hub for supply chain management. It networks logistics experts from around the Air Force to link wholesale and retail logistics and to integrate and oversee all logistic processes, technology and resources. The center commander, whose goal is to deliver end-to-end warfighter support more rapidly and at reduced cost, oversees an organization which includes two wings, a group and other units located at Scott; Tinker Air Force Base, Okla.; Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio; Hill AFB, Utah; Robins AFB, Ga.; Gunter AFS, Ala. and Langley AFB, Va. A new home for the GLSC is currently under construction on Ward Drive across the street from the base clinic. Ground was broken in early March on the $8 million building set for completion in January. The 34,000 square-foot two-story facility that will accommodate 164 positions gained from accepting workload from U.S. Air Forces Europe, Pacific Air Force, Air Forces Special Operations Command, Air Education and Training Command and Air National Guard.
