375th AW receives Outstanding Unit Award Published Feb. 12, 2009 By Airman 1st Class Andrew Davis 375th Airlift Wing Public Affairs SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. -- A recent message from Air Mobility Command's commander, Gen. Arthur Lichte announced the 375th Airlift Wing as the recipient of an Air Force Outstanding Unit Award. This award which spans the period of June 1, 2006 to May 31, 2008, is the fourth time the wing has received this coveted award since 1998. "The 375th AW qualified for the AFOUA by making truly significant contributions, measurably enhancing the Department of Defense and Air Forces ability to optimally perform their peacetime and wartime contingency missions," said Col. Gary Goldstone, 375th AW commander, in his recommendation letter for the wing. "The 375th AW is truly an outstanding unit and continually earns superb recognition as the commands 'Showcase Wing'," he added. During this period, the wing sustained the day-to-day operations for more than 6,000 assigned personnel and 66 tenant units. The wing provided unparalleled support to operations Enduring and Iraqi Freedom by providing care to more than 1,400 wounded warriors with a 98 percent survival rate. During this period the wing received a variety of awards including the 375th Medical Operations Squadron in winning the Commander-in-Chief Special Recognition Award, the 375th Security Forces Squadron earning the Department of Defense Installation Excellence Award, and the 375th AW earning an overall "Excellent" rating on its' 2007 Unit Compliance Inspection. The AFOUA is a decoration of the Air Force which was first created in 1954. The decoration is awarded as a ribbon to any command of the Air Force, including Reserve and Air National Guard which performs exceptionally meritorious service, accomplishes specific acts of outstanding achievement, excels in combat operations against an armed enemy of the United States, or conducts with distinction military operations involving conflict with, or exposure to, a hostile action by any opposing foreign force. Multiple awards of the AFOUA are denoted by oak leaf clusters on the award ribbon. The AFOUA ranks directly below the Meritorious Unit Award and above the Air Force Organizational Excellence Award in the precedence of Air Force awards and decorations. It is considered a personal decoration for personnel who were assigned or attached to the unit during period for which it was awarded, and may be worn whether or not they continue as members of the organization.
