At 11:30 p.m., March 29, 2006, Airman 1st Class Rebecca Blascak was travelling in a convoy along one of the main supply routes in Iraq when her vehicle came under attack.

In response to small arms fire, Airman Blascak, the truck commander, called her convoy commander who instructed her to keep going. But before they could get out of harm's way, an IED detonated alongside her vehicle.

Capt. Kimani Alston, the driver of their vehicle, asked Airman Blascak if she was injured and the answer was no. The convoy returned fire and proceeded for about 150 feet before stopping to inspect for damage. After no damages were reported, the convoy continued to their original destination.

Now, Senior Airman Rebecca Hagerman, 3755th Mission Support Squadron lead customer service technician, received the Air Force Combat Action Medal Feb. 11 for her actions in response to enemy contact.

"It was probably the scariest thing ever," said Airman Hagerman, a Williams Field, Ohio, native. "I'm glad everybody was O.K. though."

Despite her feelings about the event, Airman Hagerman had good impressions of the six month deployment.

"It was one of those things where you don't appreciate it while you're there, but now I miss it," Airman Hagerman said of her deployment. "If I could do it again, I would do it in a heartbeat."

Airman Hagerman also received the Army Combat Action Badge.

The recognition did not stop there though.

"I also got to meet President Bush," said Airman Hagerman. "It was so nerve wracking."

When Airman Hagerman deployed she was a member of the 375th Logistics Readiness Squadron Vehicle Operations Flight. She has since then cross trained to the Military Personnel Flight.
