375th AW goes Back to Basics Published April 15, 2009 By Senior Airman Andrew Davis 375th Airlift Wing Public Affairs SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. -- The 375th Airlift Wing participated in an Air Mobility Command directed day called Back to Basics April 9. All members of the 375th AW took part in the day, which consisted of a variety of group and squadron specific safety briefings and events. To kick off Back to Basics day a seat belt checked was initiated for morning commuters. "Members of the Safety Office were out in full force this morning (April 9) at the gates doing a seat belt check," said Col. Gary Goldstone, 375th AW commander. "We did well, less than one percent of the folks who drove through the gate were not compliant, equaling about 30 people." Seat belts were just one of the many high priorities of the day. Below are some key topics the commander spoke about during his visits to various groups: - Motorcycle safety equipment: Make sure motorcycle riders know the rules and regulations of Scott and wear the proper personal protective equipment when riding. - Drinking and driving: Never drink and drive. Team Scott members must have a game plan before going out to ensure a sober driver is always available. - Operational Readiness Inspection preparation: The first fly away will take place May 11- 17 at Volk Field, Wisc. Two more will take place in November and January. Along with the fly away exercises, Team Scott will be participating in warrior days where they will brush up on skills they may be challenged on during the ORI. After the group all calls, personnel went back to their respective squadrons where safety day continued with a variety of activities. "The safe way is the right way no matter how you look at it; your group specific briefings will allow your commanders to focus on safety issues that pertain to your office," said Colonel Goldstone. Vehicle safety, weapon safety, workplace safety, operational security, fire drills and indoor/outdoor home safety were just some of the numerous topics the squadrons covered. "Today was really about going back to the basics for safety not only on the job but at home also," said Colonel Goldstone. "Every member of Team Scott is an important asset and we can't afford to lose anyone. "This day focused on following those basic technical orders, adherence to job specific checklists, using the proper personal protective equipment and utilizing safety procedures when needed. Following these basics will keep all of Team Scott safer on the job and at home," added the colonel.
