Wing all call meeting covers safety and security Published May 29, 2009 By Steve Berry 375th Airlift Wing Public Affairs SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. -- Col. Gary Goldstone, 375th Airlift Wing commander, hosted a wing all call meeting May 21 at the Base Theater to address a variety of timely topics. He spoke about the recent climate assessment survey, Enhanced Compliance Validation, the March 2010 Operational Readiness Inspection, September scheduling, safety, electronic phishing, suicide prevention and the bone marrow donor registration drive. At the commander's request, the unit climate assessment survey was conducted Jan. 26 through Feb. 16 and 1,398 members of the 375th AW responded to the survey at a 44 percent participation rate. "It's a barometer," Colonel Goldstone said. "It tells us how we're doing." Overall, the voluntary survey respondents rated the wing favorably at 5.8 on a Likert Scale from 1 to 7. Enhanced Compliance Validation Colonel Goldstone said the ECV is a serious inspection with repercussions on par with the Operational Readiness Inspection. The ECV involves electronic information systems security. "In July there are going to be a lot of folks that are knee deep in this inspection and it cuts across our entire installation," Colonel Goldstone said. Operational Readiness Inspection Airmen and civilians viewed an ORI preparation calendar that included future dates for Warrior Days and two more fly away exercises. Many events are scheduled to prepare Scott for the March 2010 ORI. "Super September" The commander identified September as a busy month and highlighted several events including the Air Force Ball--Sept. 12, the airshow--Sept. 19-20 and Retiree Appreciation Day--Sept. 26. Safety Attendees watched a short video about the 101 Critical Days of Summer featuring Gen. Arthur Lichte, Air Mobility Command commander. The 101 CDS is a safety promotion that runs from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. The program at Scott previously focused on off-duty mishaps. This year 101 CDS will also cover on-duty safety. The theme for the 2009 101 CDS is "back to the basics at home and work." Marilee Reuter, of the base safety office, spoke more about 101 CDS after the video. She reiterated the concept of "have a wingman and be a wingman." She said being a strong wingman can be tough--like stopping a friend from driving drunk. Phishing expedition Colonel Goldstone said there was an internal "phishing expedition" conducted at Scott recently to measure electronic information security. Real life phishing is the criminally fraudulent act of trying to steal or manipulate e-mail users into giving up their personal sensitive information. Out of 197 emails sent, 11 people took the bait. Colonel Goldstone said there might be more phishing tests in the future. He warned the wing to be aware of scam e-mails requesting sensitive information. Suicide Prevention A majority of the climate assessment survey respondents indicated they know what to do when someone indicates they are going to harm themselves. Col. Pete Peters, 375th Medical Group deputy commander, said "it is a sign of strength and not weakness to identify within ourselves, or identify those folks we work with, or work for us, when they need assistance. We have almost endless resources to help folks. The difficulty is finding those folks." Bone Marrow donor registration drive Following the meeting, wing members were given the opportunity to register to be bone marrow donors. People interested in becoming donors can still register on base through Friday.
