Team Scott vocalists will be showcasing their talents Aug. 21 at the Scott Club during the local AMC Icon competition. The free event starts at 6 p.m.

The competition is modeled after TV's American Idol. Three judges will evaluate the singers on technical excellence and showmanship. Performers choose their own song and sing along with prerecorded music.

The competition is open to Team Scott, but only the highest rated AMC Air Force member can advance to the AMC-wide final competition held at the Scott Club in October. First prize for the competition Friday is $500, second prize is $300 and third prize is $200. Registration for the competition ended Aug. 7.

Mary Robles, Scott Club Manager, said interest in the competition exceeded the number of allowed participants.

"We originally had 22 (contestants) but the max was 15. We did an elimination on Thursday (Aug. 13), and we now have 13 (contestants)," she said.

The top contestants from all 12 major AMC bases will travel to Scott Oct. 22. for the final competition. The Band of Mid-America will provide backing music for the vocalists and the final competition will be broadcast live to all AMC bases. The overall winner will have a ance to try-out for Tops in Blue.

Judges for the final competition include local radio personalities Smash and Cornbread, plus University of Missouri - St. Louis' director of vocal studies, Stella Markou.

Sam Parker, Chief of Resources and Requirements for AMC Services said, "The whole purpose of it is to give the Airmen an outlet to showcase their talent and provide some entertainment for the families," he said. "It's a community event."
