Free self defense classes available to Team Scott Published Aug. 26, 2009 By Airman 1st Class Amber Kelly-Herard 375th Airlift Wing Public Affairs SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. -- Just outside the Shiloh Gate there is a new business offering free self defense classes to all Scott personnel. Rising Sun Martial Arts, used to be located in Lebanon, Ill., but now they have moved closer to better serve the Scott AFB community. "Whether you are a woman who wants to feel confidence, a child who wants to learn discipline or a man who wants to feel safer, we can help you," said Jaime Williams, RSMA owner and instructor. RSMA offers several different types of martial arts including: Isshin Jutsu, Aikido, Jujitsu, Kenjutsu, Gung Ryu and Hafeedun. "You can learn just one or all," said Mr. Williams. "If there is something we don't offer, just ask and we'll find someone to teach it." Additionally, RSMA has family classes and classes for anyone deploying. The different martial arts vary from passive fighting to throwing arts and swords. They can also teach yoga, tae kwon do, Gungio Ryu, which has elements of ninja, and Jeet Kyn Do, which is the "Bruce Lee methodology" that mixes Filipino, Indonesian and Chinese martial arts and American boxing. The instructors are all high degree black belts. Mr. Williams, who is a ninth degree black belt, has been practicing martial arts for more than 35 years and has studied in Japan, the Philippines and Germany. Scott Nolda is an eighth degree black belt who is a renshi sensei, which means mastered his own technique. Tabitha Nolda is also a black belt. Besides military personnel, police officers and teachers can also receive free classes at RSMA. "We're just excited to serve and give back to the community," said Mr. Williams. RSMA's hours of operation are Monday through Friday from 4-9 p.m., Saturday from noon to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 3-5 p.m. For more information, call 520-3734.
